European Week for Waste ReductionEuropean Week for Waste Reduction

The European Week for Waste Reduction will take place again from November 16-24, 2024. An annual campaign period that has existed since 2009 and has also been established in Germany since 2010, coordinated by the Association of Local Authorities since 2014. Part of the large-scale communication campaign is an award ceremony in Brussels, where outstanding waste prevention projects are honored.

The initiators' fundamental aim is to raise awareness of waste prevention and to highlight the connection to resource and climate protection. The core message is to limit your consumption, use things for a long time and then recycle them properly. This is made memorable by the three R's: Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

The motto of the week in 2024 is: "Down to the last crumb: use food carefully." Inspired by this, we have selected a recipe for you to turn old baked goods into a delicious casserole:

Ofenschlupfer (recipe for an ovenproof dish measuring approx. 25 x 20 cm, serves approx. 4-6 people)

Ingredients:

  • approx. 250-300 g dry bread rolls, old yeast plait or toast
  • 3 eggs, size M
  • 330 ml milk
  • 80 g sugar
  • 400 g apples
  • 50 g raisins
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • Fat for the mold

Preparation:

  • Grease the mold. Preheat oven to 175 degrees top/bottom heat.
  • Cut the cookies into thin slices.
  • Whisk the eggs with the milk and half the sugar.
  • Place the pastry slices in the mixture and leave to stand for approx. 10 mins.
  • Peel and dice the apples, mix with the cinnamon, remaining sugar and raisins.
  • Layer the pastry slices in the tin, then add an apple layer, followed by another layer of slices and so on, finish with pastry slices and pour over the remaining egg milk.
  • Bake for approx. 40 minutes, covering occasionally if the casserole is getting too brown.
